Steven Tyler is one of the most recognizable front men of all time. Surely Aerosmith must be crazy for wanting to replace him, right? Joe Perry doesn’t think so. He’s putting the word out that Aerosmith is hosting auditions for a new lead singer beginning next month. If you remember, Tyler had been on the outs with the band earlier last year. It wasn’t clear if Tyler was still with the band or wanted to do a solo gig. “As far as I’m concerned, he hasn’t left the band. But his manager has told our manager that he wants to take some time off,” Perry said about Tyler, who has since gone to rehab for an addiction to pain killers and now announced a whole bunch of medical problems that look to keep him off the stage for a while.. “He has to have leg surgery and foot surgery and it’s basically going to take him out of the picture for about a year, year and a half,” Perry said.. “So, in the meantime, the rest of the band wants to play. We’re gonna find somebody to get in there and fill that spot. Just like when [bassist Tom Hamilton] was sick – we got David Hull to come in and play bass. When [guitarist Brad Whitford] was sick, we got somebody else to come in and play for him. That’s basically how I look at it; we need another singer to fill in.” C’mon, Joe…we all know it’s not exactly the same thing. No offence to the rest of the band, but you might not notice if the bass player or guitarist is different. Everyone will notice that Steven Tyler’s not on stage. We think they should sit this one out.
