Don’t mess with Kelly Clarkson! That’s the lesson Big Machine Records CEO Scott Borchetta learned after he tried to defend Taylor Swift’s Grammy performance by taking a swipe at the talent contest that made Clarkson a star. “[Taylor Swift] is the voice of this generation. She speaks directly to (her fans), and they speak directly back to her,” Borchetta told the Associated Press. “This is not American Idol. This is not a competition of getting up and seeing who can sing the highest note. This is about a true artist and writer and communicator. It’s not about that technically perfect performance.” While it’s true American Idol has unleashed the likes of William Hung and Sanjaya on the world, the hit TV show has also discovered its fair share of true artists. Names like Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry come to mind, not to mention Clarkson herself. Clarkson quickly took to her blog to speak her mind about Borchetta’s slight. “I understand defending your artist obviously because I have done the same in the past for artists I like, including Taylor, so you might see why it’s upsetting to read you attacking American Idol for producing simply vocalists that hit ‘the high notes,’” Clarkson wrote. “Thank you for that ‘Captain Obvious’ sense of humor because you know what, we not only hit the high notes, you forgot to mention we generally hit the ‘right’ notes as well.” Clarkson then signed her blog, “Sincerely, One of those contestants from American Idol who only made it because of her high notes.”
