The new Cristian Rivera Foundation newsletter is out and this one’s different from the rest. It marks one year since John ‘Gungie” Rivera started the Foundation to find a cure for Pontine Glioma, the disease that took the life of his six-year-old son, Cristian. The Foundation has certainly accomplished a lot in its first year. There was a fundraiser gala at Eden, the site of Cristian’s fifth birthday party. Guests like actor Luis Guzman, actress Miriam Colon, filmmaker Franc Reyes, international Salsa star Jose Alberto “El Canario,” Dina Manzo of Real Housewives of New Jersey, former New York City mayoral candidate Bill Thompson and rapper Jim Jones all helped to raise money and honor Cristian’s life. Since then, the Foundation has run a billboard campaign on the West Side Highway, appeared on various television programs to raise awareness, and grew to become an esteemed member of the DIPG community. To read all about what the Foundation’s accomplished so far, plus what we can look forward to in the future, visit cristianriverafoundation.org and check out the News page.

Put on your shades on for this one people, because the stars will be out at Mega Jam 2010! This is a show you won’t want to miss with performances by an outstanding list of artists: Natasha Bedingfield, Jay Sean, Shaggy, Kelis, Chris Willis, Kardinal Offishal, Lucas Prata and there’s plenty more where that came from. With Kelis’ messy divorce with Nas out of the way, we have a feeling her milkshake will bring all the boys and girls to the show. We’re hoping to sing along to favorites like “Unwritten” and “Love Like This” from Natasha Bedingfield. Let’s not forget Shaggy’s “Hey Sexy Lady” that’s sure to get everyone dancing. And on a nice note, a portion of the proceeds from Mega Jam 2010 are earmarked to benefit the Cristian Rivera Foundation, a very important cause. This event is jam packed with talent. It takes place at The Country Fair Entertainment Park in Medford, NY on Saturday, July 17. The event begins at noon and lasts until 9pm. We’ll see you there!

DJ Tedsmooth hosted another extraordinary BBQ Sunday June 27th. The event was held at the park on 119th street, between 2nd and 3rd avenue. The BBQ was indeed very old school. The entertainment included break dancing and free styling. Even the guests were in the spirit of the theme with their 80’s attire. Guests included famous DJ’s such as Luv Bug Starsky and Cre-8. This BBQ was definitely a family event where everyone could come out, all ages included, and have a good time and the best thing about it, it was free. Tedsmooth also used the opportunity at this event to support a foundation that is very close to his heart, the Cristian Rivera Foundation. There was a huge banner and wrist bands were sold to support the fight against Pontine Glioma.

image002Monday, January 25 was a solemn day at the Cristian Rivera Foundation. It was one year ago that day that six-year-old Cristian Rivera succumbed to the inoperable brain tumor with which he’d been afflicted two years prior. We want to take a moment to remember Cristian and we hope you’ll all do the same by visiting cristianriverafoundation.org where you can see photos of Cristian, read journals chronicling his illness, and make a donation to help find a cure for Pontine Glioma.
